Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT) is a holistic approach guided by the foundational belief that the body, mind, and spirit are interconnected and should be addressed in treatment. The American Dance Therapy Association defines DMT as “the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual.” Dance/movement therapists (DMTs) are master’s level therapists trained to identify and address psychological connections to movement and embodied experiences.

How Does Dance/Movement Therapy Work?

DMTs use the body and movement for assessment, intervention, prevention, and treatment. This may include assessing: posture,
how you navigate space through your movement, limitations in movement, and movement preferences. DMTs may use tools such
as movement coding processes, the Kestenberg Movement Profile, Laban Movement Analysis in the therapy process.

DMT sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each individual. Some interventions you may experience include:

  • Body part warm-up
  • Methods to engage breath
  • Observation of the body in sessions
  • Exploring how your body feels in the moment
  • Increasing awareness of how your body responds to verbally sharing experiences in your life
  • Embodying things you do not have the words to share verbally
  • Reflecting on how your emotions and experiences live in your body
  • Exploring your movement preferences
  • Practicing alternate modes of movement to expand your movement repertoire
  • Verbally processing connections between your movement and your experiences
