Post the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic you will have the option of either continuing video sessions or coming to therapy in person at our downtown Chicago location or our Evanston office or our Northern suburban location. You will also have the option to pursue a combination of both video and in-person sessions.

Online therapy has become more popular and accessible since 2020 and for good reason. It is proven as effective as in person therapy and comes with added benefits that make it the right fit for many clients. Benefits of online therapy include:

  1. Convenience: Therapy can be done anywhere in the state of Illinois with a computer, iPad or phone and is accessible through a simple link. There is no commute time, no getting stuck on a slow elevator, no traffic to consider and no weather to contend with. No matter what the circumstance, online therapy provides a high level of convenience which makes therapy itself more broadly accessible for those in need. 
  2. Anonymity: Leaving one place to walk or drive to therapy comes with the opportunity to be seen and asked questions. Some people might not feel ready to talk about their therapeutic experience, or they might know that it wouldn’t be received well by people in their lives, so online therapy allows for complete privacy and anonymity. 
  3. Home comforts: Online therapy allows for the client to be secure in their own space, with objects that offer comfort while doing challenging therapeutic work. Feeling comfortable in the space allows the client to remain more grounded, and certain objects such as a cozy blanket, their favorite scent or minty gum can bring comfort and calm to the client. 
  4. Flexibility: Schedules are always changing, and online therapy means that a client can have more consistent access to therapy when their schedule suddenly changes. For example, if a client was planning on working from home and having therapy during their lunch hour, but suddenly has to go into the office, therapy doesn’t have to be cancelled. If the client can find a quiet, private place during their lunch hour they can still have therapy that day. The flexibility that online therapy provides ensures greater continuity of care and consistent access to therapy. 
  5. Covered by insurance: Beginning in 2020 online therapy is mandated to be accepted and approved the same as in person therapy by all insurance companies, and it is covered at the same rate as in person therapy. This removes any financial barriers and ensures that everyone has access to the benefits of online therapy without having to pay out of pocket.
  6. Access to resources at home: If a client is at home while having an online therapy session, they have access to things that could be therapeutically beneficial. For example, they might have had a worksheet assigned for homework that is easily accessible at home, or maybe they write in a therapy journal each week and like to reference it during session. In person therapy requires these objects to be brought with the client, and if they are forgotten it would have a negative impact on the therapeutic experience. Additionally, being at home opens the door for meaningful exposure work, with greater access to objects and situations that fit perfectly into a client’s exposure treatment plan. 

What makes online therapy unique?

Your therapist will be able to interact with you in the context of your own home. This is relevant to the therapeutic process because when you are in your natural environment, you will likely present more authentically in your sessions which will facilitate more effective therapeutic work. Online therapy also allows your therapist to virtually support you as you practice some treatment interventions in the very environment that might be triggering you and the interventions can be more realistic than if you were only practicing them in an office setting.

How should you prepare for online therapy sessions?

At Cityscape Counseling we offer the option of conducting your therapy session either via a video platform or by phone, whatever you are most comfortable with. If you select to engage in therapy via video, your therapist will let you know which video platform they use before your first session (all our therapists use HIPAA compliant, safe and secure platforms that are free of charge for our clients to use – such as doxy.me, zoom pro etc). If you do choose video therapy, be sure that your laptop or tablet has an accessible camera and microphone. You will also want to ensure that you have a strong wifi connection and a private area where you can freely communicate.

To enhance privacy, you may want to use a headset or play white noise to sound proof your conversations if you are indoors. Otherwise it can be useful to sit in your car or find a quiet and safe outdoor area to have your session. You could also “walk and talk” which many clients report helps them clear their mind to be more intentional during their therapy conversations.
