5 Tips to Help with Travel Anxiety

Do you have a trip planned and notice yourself feeling anxious, ruminating, and maybe even fearful? That is normal! Below are 5 tips to help with travel anxiety and ease discomfort prior to traveling and while traveling.

1. Make a packing list

Making a list can help ease some anxiety when it is time to pack for your trip. Do a packing brain dump and leave it on the list so that you can enjoy other activities leading up to your trip, without the fear of forgetting something.

2. Do Some Research

Research the hotels, places, and restaurants ahead of time. Familiarize yourself with the area by looking at pictures and menus, and getting more information about it. Familiarity brings feelings of safety.

3. Confide in a Support Person

Make sure you have at least one person to talk to and lean on during your trip. The person does not have to be on the trip with you, just someone you can get ahold of if you need additional support.

4. Work in Parts of Your Routine

When you are home, do you go for daily walks? See if you can find a way to work that in! Do you like to have coffee every morning? Scope out some coffee shops prior to your trip to ensure you can maintain that daily activity. Do you sleep with an eye mask every night? Bring it along! Bringing in pieces of your at home routine can increase a sense of safety and control.

5. Set Boundaries

Make sure to continue to check in with yourself and acknowledge where boundaries are needed. Try not to overcommit, and listen to your body. If you feel fatigued, overstimulated, or overwhelmed, set a boundary and take the steps you need to nourish yourself and increase your personal resources.
