Kara Handy, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, is a warm, caring, and passionate therapist in Chicago who specializes in the treatment of adolescents and adults struggling with eating disorders, body image, anxiety, self-worth, and perfectionism. She is an online therapist who sees clients virtually.
Kara holds a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Trinity International University. Before pursuing private practice, Kara gained experience working in various roles at Eating Recovery Center in their residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs. In working with her clients, Kara utilizes various approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and works from a Health at Every Size approach (HAES). She also believes that exploring the impact of childhood and cultural experiences with her clients to be a helpful and healing part of recovery.
One of the main reasons Kara decided to become a therapist was due to her own journey of personal growth and healing in therapy. Her biggest passion as a therapist is to help her clients in their recovery from an eating disorder. She wholeheartedly believes that recovery IS possible! Regardless of anyone’s story or present struggle when coming to therapy, Kara strives to create a warm and safe space for clients to feel seen and understood as they pursue the growth and healing they want for their lives.
While her office is located in downtown Chicago next to Millenium park for in-person sessions, she also welcomes and serves clients for online therapy from anywhere in Illinois. Clients from the Chicagoland area may choose in-office or online therapy and usually commute from surrounding areas such as River North, South Loop, West Loop, Gold Coast, Old Town, Lincoln Park, Lake View, Logan Square, Wicker Park, Bucktown and many more.
